Jan 28, 2012 - Single-Speed Conversion PDF E-mail

Shifters and Derailleurs WorkshopThis class will be a two-hour informational session on how to convert a regular drivetrain to a single-speed setup. There will be examples and an explanation of the tools and parts necessary. Single-speeds are great for riding on relatively flat landscapes, e.g. downtown boulder, and the minimalism makes them aesthetically pleasing to many. Basic bike knowledge is recommended but not required. If you are looking to convert a bike you currently have, bring it and we can talk about the specifics of how to do it. People are also encouraged to buy a membership and stay in the afternoon to apply the knowledge from the class and actually convert their bike.

This workshop is being taught by Sam Reis and Nate Kawa.

Cost: $20
Cost for members: $10

Reserve a spot in the Single-Speed Conversion workshop.

Feb 4, 2012 - Winter Cycling Workshop PDF E-mail

alt

Winter poses special challenges to the utilitarian cyclist. If you ride purely for fun and fitness you tend not to ride when it's dark and cold and snowy. If your bike is your primary transportation, you don't necessarily have this option. After all, you'll still need groceries in February! But don't worry, 80% of cyclists in Copenhagen, Denmark keep on biking all winter long, and you can too with a little bit of extra knowledge and experience.

There are three main differences between fair weather and winter cycling: more darkness, the cold, and snow and ice on the roads. In this workshop, we'll cover what it takes to ride safely and comfortably in Boulder all winter long, from making sure you've got lights bright enough to see, not just be seen, to keeping your fingers, toes and nose from going numb. We'll also talk about riding techniques to keep you upright on snowy and icy surfaces, and the additional maintenance your winter steed may require.

Winter riding may be challenging sometimes, but you'll never have to scrape a windshield, and occasionally it's downright magical. There's nothing quite like riding home through a silent, snow-clad night as the flakes slowly drift by, and discovering a fox bounding along beside the trail.

This workshop will be led by Dan Adams & Fred Ecks. For more info, check out: Winter cycling workshop

Feb 7, 2012 - Wheel Building Class PDF E-mail

Wheel Building

Wheel Building

Have you ever wanted to learn how to build a bicycle wheel? This class will offer you the skills to find your spoke lengths, lace your wheel, tension it, and true it.  We strongly recommend that you know how to true a wheel and adjust hubs first, but no experience is necessary.  Look at our other workshops to learn these skills first.

We will go over the following topics: crash course on wheels, spoke calculation, wheel-building tools and materials, hub holes and spacing, lubrication of spokes, lacing wheels, lateral true, radial true, and dish.

This class is designed to teach you how to build a wheel, but you will need to provide your own materials or purchase them from us to be able to take the wheel you build.  We will teach you how to build a wheel, so if you choose not to keep it, your wheel will go to our community bike shop and help support our programs.

You're also welcome to become a member and build a wheel during our open shop hours.

This class is set for 3 hours and is limited to 6 students.  This class is being taught by Brett Schager

Cost: $100
Cost for members: $90

Stop by our shop and speak to the Shop Manager about purchasing materials to bring to this class.

Reserve a spot in the Wheel Building Class.
